SINGAPORE - Gather ’round—for the most un-Hollywood-glam yet entirely unforgettable scene rolled out the yellow brick carpet in Singapore last night. The lovely Ariana Grande—all shimmering in Glinda white at the premiere of Wicked: For Good—had a fright so sudden it might just rewrite the red-carpet rule book.

Picture this: the photogs’ flashes pop, the crowd leans in, and Ariana, radiant as ever, glides past in her satin heels and custom gown. Beside her? The fierce and fabulous Cynthia Erivo—Elphaba herself—grinning for the cameras, a queen at ease. Then—bam!—a man, later identified as one Johnson Wen (a so-called “Pyjama Man” stalking social media angles), charges the barricade and grabs Ariana mid-pose.
Now, in classic stage-hero fashion, Cynthia leaps in. She interposes herself between the assailant and her co-star, arm out, face set, voice raised. Security finally closes in. Ariana appears shaken, heart fluttering, deep breaths visible. Michelle Yeoh moves in to comfort her.
It was a dazzling tableau: one moment, all sparkle and premieres; the next, raw and human. Ariana, ever the professional, holds her ground. But let’s not pretend this was glamour-only. The incident triggered questions: where was the security? Why was a fan able to breach the barricade? And most poignantly—how do you worry about safety when you’ve already lived through trauma (Ariana has been open about her anxiety and PTSD following the Manchester bombing in 2017)?
Meanwhile, Cynthia’s reaction? Bravo, darling. She showed the kind of loyalty and quick instinct that turns co-star into guardian. The internet is already crowning her “Momma Bear” of the yellow carpet.
Of course, the man at the center of this spectacle posted his own “success” video on Instagram—thank you note to Ariana included. He’s apparently been part of other stunts at celebrity events. Goodness.
So what have we learned? That even on the most glamorous nights, the unpredictable lurks just beyond the spotlight. But also: that friendship, presence, and readiness matter. When the unexpected strikes, glamour alone won’t do—it takes character, fortitude, and a swift protective instinct.
Stay tuned. We’ll expect both Ariana and Cynthia to glide on, stronger, smarter, and more radiant than ever.
