Anthony Geary, a titan of daytime television and the man who made General Hospital's Luke Spencer a household name, passed away at the age of 78 in Amsterdam after complications from a routine surgical procedure. A beloved member of the soap community and one-half of the supercouple that made daytime what it is today, the actor was pronounced dead at the scene. Fans, friends, and peers are mourning the loss of this legend, leaving a heavy cloud of grief and remembrance over social media.

By Allan R. Ellenberger

He was born Tony Dean Geary in Coalville, Utah, on May 29, 1947, and raised in a small coal-mining town there by his father, who owned a construction company, and his mother, who was a housewife. He was the youngest of four children and grew up in a close family with three sisters. Although he was raised with the regular routine of the American West, even as a child, people around him saw a creative streak in him. A scholarship to the University of Utah made him look into acting, and soon, his talents were noticed by more established actors — including Jack Albertson — who mentored him and began to point him towards the stage and professional work.

A product of the late-1960s/1970s TV episodic boom, Geary guest-starred on many series of the time including All in the Family, The Mod Squad, and The Partridge Family. He proved himself as a solid actor with a versatility that left him ripe for a greater challenge. The producers of many popular soap operas looked to actors that could take on the emotional roller coasters and day-to-day dramas. They cast Geary in two series, Bright Promise and The Young and the Restless. Producer Gloria Monty gave Geary the role of Luke Spencer on General Hospital in 1978, a role that would change his life and the world of daytime television.

Luke Spencer was not always the hero he would become. Written as a mob-connected outsider with a brash edge, the character initially unsettled audiences. Yet in Geary’s hands — charismatic, unpredictable, and electric opposite co-star Genie Francis’s Laura Webber — Luke evolved into a defining figure of the genre. Their storyline, erupting into the cultural zeitgeist, vaulted General Hospital to the top of the ratings and brought soap opera drama into mainstream conversation. The 1981 Luke and Laura wedding episode drew an estimated 30 million viewers, becoming one of the most watched moments in television history, with Hollywood’s own Elizabeth Taylor appearing in the broadcast’s wedding festivities.

Over more than four decades, Geary navigated both the extraordinary demands and the extraordinary rewards of daytime work like no other. He earned a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor — a testament not only to General Hospital’s sweeping narratives but to Geary’s ability to sustain emotional depth over years of storytelling. He left the show briefly in the early 1980s, only to return again and again, anchoring some of its most beloved and complex arcs. His tenure spanned nearly 2,000 episodes, a body of work unmatched in its endurance.

Yet Geary was more than Luke Spencer. Across his career he showed a willingness to explore varied roles, from film appearances to other television work, always carrying into each project the authenticity and commitment that defined his best performances. He walked away from General Hospital formally in 2015, choosing to embrace life beyond the soap’s relentless pace, though he would make a final guest appearance in 2017. In retirement he settled in Amsterdam with his husband, Claudio Gama, a partnership forged in love and strengthened over decades. It was in the Netherlands that Geary’s life’s journey — one marked by artistic risk and emotional truth — came to its close.

Information about his death across outlets indicates that complications from a scheduled operation led to his passing on December 14, 2025, at the age of 78. His husband, family, and friends described the news as a shock, their grief echoing across continents and through the countless lives touched by his work.

To say that Anthony Geary’s contribution to daytime television has been “monumental” is a vast understatement. It’s something his fans have always known, deep down. Geary’s mastery of the craft brought a depth of humanity to each scene, and it’s why characters like Luke Spencer can feel like a family member. Luke was combustible, romantic, flawed, broken and utterly mesmerizing — and, to some degree, all of that was life imitated art. The memory of Anthony Geary will live on not only in the Emmys that recognize his achievements as an actor, but also in the lives of the millions of people he entertained week after week, year after year, and for generations of families who tuned in to see what he would do next.

Geary has been living full-time in Amsterdam for several years with his husband, Claudio Gama.

Friends, fans and castmates share their remembrances of the man, and his life is a remarkable example of how one passionate storyteller can change an entire genre — and how people who loved him will never forget.
