Hollywood’s awards race snapped into focus this morning as the Golden Globes unveiled the 2026 nominations, instantly crowning Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another as the season’s early powerhouse. The counterculture epic led all films with nine nominations, including best motion picture (musical or comedy), best director, and acting nods for Leonardo DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti, with Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn appearing in the supporting categories. Jonny Greenwood’s score rounded out the film’s commanding presence.

Not far behind was Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value, earning eight nominations, including best motion picture – drama, best director, and acting recognition for Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning, and Stellan Skarsgård. Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners followed with seven nominations, securing major placements for best motion picture – drama, best director, and best actor (drama) for Michael B. Jordan.

The best motion picture – drama race shapes up as a global showcase, with Sentimental Value, Sinners, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, and the Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent all competing for the top prize.

Drama acting categories came in strong with nominations for Joel Edgerton, Oscar Isaac, Dwayne Johnson, Jeremy Allen White, Jessie Buckley, Jennifer Lawrence, and Julia Roberts.

On the musical/comedy side, One Battle After Another faces competition from Marty Supreme, Bugonia, Blue Moon, Jay Kelly, and the Emile Hirsch–starring The Testament of Ann Lee. Ethan Hawke, George Clooney, Jesse Plemons, Lee Byung-hun, and DiCaprio lead the actor race, while Amanda Seyfried, Emma Stone, Kate Hudson, Cynthia Erivo, and Infiniti headline the actress field.

One of the morning’s notable surprises was the mixed outcome for Wicked: For Good. While shut out of the top film category, it still earned major nominations for Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, two original songs, and a spot in the cinematic and box office achievement category.

In television, the comedy series The White Lotus led the pack with six nominations, including nods for best drama series and acting nominations for Aimee Lou Wood, Carrie Coon, Jason Isaacs, and Parker Posey. Netflix’s Adolescence was the frontrunner in the limited series race, while The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Hacks, and Only Murders in the Building rode the wave of their awards-season success in the comedy categories.

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Nikki Glaser, will air live on January 11 from the Beverly Hilton. The nominees are now whetted and sharpened; the race is set. Hollywood enters a contest that looks less predictable — and more competitive — than it has in years.
